Notice
"7 and 7 Is" has been covered by many, many High-Profile "Rock" Bands, including Ramones, Rush, Sods, and Alice Cooper. It is simply a hard charging aggressive song with brilliant Imagination behind it. The main force of the Band "Love" was Arthur Lee (Rhythm and Lead Guitarist/Lead Vocals), whose Career spanned over Four Decades.
Amazingly, "7 and 7 Is" was recorded a completely "Studio Live" take with no overdubs, though it took around 40 to 60 Takes (from what I have gathered) to get a useable Version to Tape. On a lighter note, the Flip-Side of the USA 45 Single Release was titled "No. 14".
It was during 1966-68 though, that Lee gained noteriety, mainly in the Psychedelic Scene on the Strip (in L.A.). "Love" was the embodiment of L.A. Rock Music at the time, and the top draw at the Whiskey a Go-Go. Lee was also responsible for bringing Jim Morrison and the Doors to Electra Records, but thereafter, "Love" always seemed to be living under the shadow of the Doors.
"7 and 7 Is" reached #42 on Billboard Charts in the USA, but this is nearly criminal as their following was 10 times bigger in the U.K. The House of Commons voted Love's classic Album "Forever Changes" the Greatest Album of All-Time a while back, and I think Arthur Lee was very close to earning an M.B.E. (Sir Arthur Lee)...has a nice ring to it. ("Forever Changes" was also just recently acclaimed as #11 Album All-Time by Mojo Magazine).
Lee passed away on Auguat 3, 2006, but has probably infuenced more Rock Stars than can be counted. He was very close friendes with Jimi Hendrix, and Jimi even made a cameo appearance on Love's 6th Album, "False Start". "Box of Frogs" (Robert Plant's band before Led Zeppelin), did 3 or 4 Cover Tunes of Arthur Lee's. Plant has always cited Lee as his main Musical Influence.
...Okay, enough already, now some Performance Notes -
The Song is panned on the Original Recording with Guitars in the Right Channel, Bass in the Left Channel, which was standard practice in the 4-Track Days. I have mixed the parts with a more Modern Flavor, so everything can be heard clearly.
I have assigned the most prominent Guitar Parts to Guitar 1 for simplification purposes.
The Rhythm Guitar 1 is Steeped Heavily with "Vibrato", cycling in 16th Notes (This effect can easily be achieved with a standard Delay Unit). Rhythm Guitar 2 is very dry, just a supporting role. Recorded Pitch is +0.36 over Standard Tuning, so you will have to Tune "Up" just a bit to Jam along.
Enjoy the Tablature!!
J Baker Bass Player (Ken Forssi) plays Octave Bass "Chords" during the Main Theme Sections. It also sounds like (to me) that there are NO Hammer-Ons (except where noted), and all of the notes DO sound fully "Plucked".
I used the "Electric Bass (pick)" sound patch as it is much easier to hear the Bass Transcription, though it sounds like Ken is playing with no Pick.
