"Love is the Answer" is one of those hidden jewels in the Rundgren/Utopia Discography. Though, it is seemingly never mentioned in the same breath as his hit "Hello, It's Me", or even "Bang the Drum All Day", but it sold even more Copies, and Charted Top 10 for many weeks. How can this be? Well, the song was recorded by "England Dan & John Ford Coley", and they were red-hot Hit Song Makers at the time.
...though, I have heard both versions countless times, and the England Dan version is almost a note-for-note copy of the Utopia 45 release Version, which barely made the Hot 100. All that, even after a Promo gig (August 18, 1978, in which they previewed the song, and performed in the Utopia white colored "Space Suits") on the Mike Douglas Show!!
Pretty freekin' BAD (umm, that means good, doesn't it?), Kasim Sulton with the Ikon Bass, Powell with the wireless Keyboard, Wilcox on his Motorcycle Drum Kit. I think Mr. Douglas was either shocked or terrified by the whole scene, as Utopia played (I think) 4 Songs on that TV Show. He was (what we used to call) L7. How times (and TV) have changed...
Guitar I is defining the overall structure of the song, while Guitar II is picking out parts of the Melody (in Harmony), as well as the thick wall of Backing Vocals.
