"The Clap" showcases yet another of Steve Howe's many guitar styles, that of acoustic fingerpicking, fusing country, ragtime, jazz and classical ideas into a cohesive musical whole. This piece will pose a challenge even to experienced fingerpickers, especially if played up to Steve's tempo, but beginners and intermediates will gain from working through it slowly. All downstemmed notes are to be picked with the thumb; for chordal sections or bars without downstemming players are free to determine their own fingerpicking. A study of the recording is recommended to hear how Steve combines the feeling of reckless abandon with that of precision in execution. This is a great piece to memorize and add to your repertoire.
