Considered one of the most popular and beloved tangos in Argentina, this song's rhythm is combined with that of the milonga, so it is often called "Tango Milonga".
Played at a slow tempo, "El Choclo's" rhythm has a tango feeling. If played at a faster tempo, it will sound like a city milonga {urbana}, as opposed to the Milonga Campera {from the country}, which is both more melancholic and romantic at the same time.
The great Enrique Santos Discepolo wrote the words to this piece: "Con este tango naclo el tango y como un grito salio del sordido barrial buscando el cielo." Translated, it means, With this tango, the tango was born and crying loud, went out from the sordid suburb in search of heaven,"
"El Choclo," along with its contemporary, "La Cumparista," could well be the pioneers of this exciting and elegant dance.
